Overview

Avalara AvaTax + TackQuote

TackQuote calls Avalara AvaTax with the quote's ship-from and ship-to addresses and each line's amount, and writes the rate Avalara returns back onto the line. Rates come from your own AvaTax account, so the jurisdictions, product tax codes and nexus configuration you already maintain are the ones that apply — TackQuote adds no rate table of its own. Credentials are per-tenant: your AvaTax account id and licence key are stored encrypted and used only for your quotes. If Avalara cannot be reached, the quote is marked as having no tax provider rather than being given a guessed rate, because a plausible-looking tax figure that no tax authority produced is worse than a visible gap.

Connect your Avalara account once, then every quote is priced against it automatically as lines are added.

Where to connect. Setup happens in the seller portal — most connectors under Integrations, the rest on the Settings page named in the setup steps below.

Before you start

What you'll need

  • Active Avalara AvaTax account with an account id and licence key
  • A configured ship-from address in TackQuote

Setup

How to connect Avalara AvaTax

  1. Connect Avalara

Enter your AvaTax account id and licence key in TackQuote Settings → Tax, and set the address your business ships from.
  2. Confirm your nexus

Nexus and product tax codes stay in Avalara. TackQuote sends addresses and amounts; Avalara decides what is taxable and at what rate.
  3. Quote as normal

Tax is calculated as lines are added and recalculated when the quote or its addresses change. The calculated rate is stored on the line.

Capabilities

What you get

Per-Line Calculation

Each quote line is priced against its own tax treatment rather than one blended rate for the quote, so mixed-taxability quotes are correct line by line.

Your AvaTax Configuration

Nexus states, product tax codes and exemption handling come from your Avalara account. TackQuote does not maintain a parallel rate table that could drift from it.

Per-Tenant Credentials

Your AvaTax account id and licence key are stored encrypted at rest and resolved per tenant, so quoting runs against your own Avalara subscription and your own filing data.

No Invented Rates

A failed or unconfigured Avalara call produces an explicit "no tax provider" state, never a fallback percentage. The absence of a rate is visible instead of being papered over.

FAQ

Avalara AvaTax questions

Does TackQuote file or remit my sales tax?

No. This integration calculates tax on quotes. Filing and remittance stay in Avalara, which is where your returns and liability reporting live.

What happens if Avalara is unreachable?

The quote is flagged as having no tax provider connected and no tax is applied. TackQuote will never substitute an estimated or default percentage — a wrong tax figure that looks right is harder to catch than a missing one.

Can I use Avalara for calculation and ExemptAx for certificates?

Yes. They answer different questions: Avalara determines the rate, ExemptAx validates whether a given buyer is exempt from it.
